Happyhour - Funeral Hymns (2019, Rundgång Records)

Swedish musicians Micke, Anti, Axel, aka Happyhour, are new comers to the world of alternative post-rock/metal music with shoegaze and doom vibes. Their sound is abrasive and yet full of melancholy, a communion of different emotions and dark motifs enriched by enthralling vocal deliveries.

Funeral Hymns is the name of their first cassette, a 4 track output mixing doom, shoegaze, and even some pop melodies. A modern melting pot looking to the 90's as well as to today's sound, a grim revision of familiar emotions under a different guise.

När Jag Tänker På Dig is a crushing but eerie effort with doom-ish downtuned guitars and ethereal vocals, a work full of pathos and evocative passages with an hint of darkness. Refrains full of melodies and even piano notes keep an intimate and human dimension amidst the Juggernaut made of grave sounds. Wounds follows suit with irresistible choruses and droning distorted riffs, recalling the spirit of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain in a less saturated enviroment.

Kosmos / Kaos welcomes us with a soulful sound soon reached by slow and abrasive guitars. Melodic elements are not forgotten, and emotional crescendos full of pathos guide us until cosmic sounds give us a dreamy climax. Once again the fusion of shoegaze sensibilities and dark atmospheres makes wonder. Hjärta ends the album with its delicate notes violated by shrilling mantras and captivating movements. A nightly soundscape opens to doom passages and graceful vocals. The track ends with a gentle guitar sound after an almost oniric lyrical passage.

Funeral Hymns is little hidden gem rich in emotions and vibes, familiar yet new in its composition and structure. 90's nostalgia meets a modern taste for the dark in a sincere and enthralling sound which captures the listener. A recommended listening experience for any lover of abrasive but meaningful music
