MeVsMyself is the experimental/ethnic project of Milan artist Giorgio Pinardi, in which he uses his voice as an instrument - following the example of past's vocal artists like Demetrio Stratos e Bobby Mc Ferrin and mixing it with world music and different modern sources.
After the debut Yggdrasill (2015), he now returns on Alterjinga with the sophomore effort Mictlàn. Here Arab, Chinese, Indian music become the underlining element for his vocal experiments, giving us a personal dimension with light, darkness, ancient and contemporary atmospheres.
Khnum with what seems field-recordings samples (actually it's his heavily modified voice), in an almost droning take with blasting sounds from a storm. Then, it opens to Pinardi's vocals in a rhythmic vocal melody which slowly grows reaching a captivating climax. Gurfa has a sort of "pop" formula, while keeping all the distinctive aspects of the project. A looping vocal delivery moves amidst an enthralling march, slowing down in the end.
Sygyzy starts as a sort of alternative orchestral track, evoking dissonant atmospheres, until it morphs in a theatrical affair where the voice becomes an actor with many roles. Eostre ends the album with sharp effects and breathless loops, adding during its course solemn arches and crying babies
Mictlàn is a very peculiar and experimental work presenting a vision rooted in an all encompassing style in which the voice becomes the main protagonist and a tool made to be transformed, fragmented, manipulated. If you are the curious listener, give it a try.
